Good News . . . Please keep praying . . .

From: Marilyn Schulz on behalf of Jon Wallace

Message from the President Dec. 21

December 21, 2005

Dear APU Students,

Just before this Christmas week, I wanted to update you on what I know about this journey God has me on. First of all, thank you so much for banging on the doors of heaven on my behalf. I have come to discover God's powerful work in my life and ministry and family. Please continue to support me and my family as we move down this road of faith.

Today, Gail and I received some encouraging news when we visited with our doctor at USC Norris Cancer Center. He informed us that after reading the X-rays and reviewing the tests done yesterday, there is no evidence of tumors. We know that the one enlarged lymph node that was removed was malignant, but it is a huge relief to learn that there are no apparent tumors.

The next step is that I will have surgery on January 26 to remove the remaining lymph nodes in the right groin area. Following that, a course of treatment will be established based on the pathology findings.

Now to what's really important. As you might imagine, God has been working in a powerful way in my heart and mind. Up to this point, when I talked about walking a journey of faith, it was mostly a metaphor borrowed from the experiences of others and my own shallow cupboard. Today, I am discovering that the journey of faith really is throwing your arms tightly around our Abba and trusting Him for every single day.

Sitting in the waiting room trying to prepare for the worst and hoping for the best this morning brought me into God's presence in a way I have never known before. Chip Anderson always reminded us of that verse from John where Jesus is praying to His Father in preparation for the Cross, and He says to His Abba, "I have brought You glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do (John 17: 4)." None of us know the hour or time when God will determine that our workday is done. What I was reminded this morning is that I am honored as husband, father, friend, and president to be about my Father's work.

As you pray for me and my family, and as you celebrate with us this encouraging news, would you please pray that each of us will clearly focus on that which God has entrusted to us, so like Jesus we can say, "Father, we have accomplished that which you gave us to do."

Merry Christmas! I look forward to seeing you in the New Year.

Jon R. Wallace, President, Azusa Pacific University, NEEDS Urgent Prayer!

Monday, December 19, 2005

Our son Drew Walsh, who is a Junior at Azusa, received this email while home on Christmas vacation. He asked me: "Dad, I need your help. I just received this from Dr. Wallace, the President of Azusa. He is in urgent need of prayer. Can you send this out to your prayer warriors in the state and ask them to pray for him?" Of course! And it is with the prayers of our family and many others that will ask for the Lord's powerful, healing Hand to touch Dr. Wallace's body, for complete restoration. Thank you to the many others who will join their prayers and hearts for Dr. Jon Wallace!

From: Jon R. Wallace
President

Azusa Pacfic University

Please forgive that this email is coming en masse and not to each of you individually. I felt it was important to let you know what my family and I are facing at this time.

Just recently, I had an enlarged lymph node removed for biopsy. The pathology report indicates that I have metastatic carcinoma. While the road ahead has much uncertainty, of this I am certain: God's plan for APU and for me has not changed.

During this time of clarifying the best treatment plan, I will be taking some time away from the office. In my absence, the same executive leadership team that directed the university during my recent study leave will assume primary leadership.

The Executive Committee of the Board is aware and in full support of this strategy. We are so fortunate as a university to have the depth of leadership found in the President's Cabinet, the Academic Cabinet, and the overall leadership team.

Knowing you as I do, I am confident that you will keep me and my family in your prayers.
To assist with my family's privacy during this new journey, we will appreciate your routing any notes and messages through my office at the university.

Jon R. Wallace
President

My Life Verse:
I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

CAPITOL NOTEBOOK ll CALIFORNIA

JUST ONE 'BIG HAPPY FAMILY: Out with the rage, in with the new "big happy family."

After facing a revolt from conservatives the week before over his hiring of Susan Kennedy, a former aide to Gov. Gray Davis and a top Democratic Party activist, Schwarzenegger emerged from a meeting with Republican leaders saying the party was once again "one big family." A family, Schwarzenegger added, that is fully committed to his re-election effort.

The lowdown: While conservatives stopped dropping names such as actor Mel Gibson to replace Schwarzenegger on the GOP ticket next year, Kennedy's presence in the governor's inner circle is bound to cause headaches for Republican strategists in an election year. Still, Kennedy's hiring seemed to ruffle Republican feathers only in Sacramento; voters statewide didn't seem to notice much. Click for source and other Headlines

Hollywood declares war on family values…again

Hollywood declares war on family values…again
A movie glorifying homosexual “sex” and overtly denigrating Christian values seems to be on its way to Best Picture in Hollywood’s eyes. Brokeback Mountain , a vulgar and violent movie about two homosexual cowboys, which is running on limited screens in liberal cities, won the most Golden Globe nominations Tuesday – seven, including best drama. Last year’s Million Dollar Baby – which glorified a man “helping” a paralyzed woman to commit suicide – won big at the Academy Awards after first winning big at the Golden Globe Awards. It seems that if something is morally wrong, Hollywood usually says that it's right! Read the review by Movieguide.org .

Uncovering Misinformation About Christmas

12.13.2005

PJI Counters Misinformation About Christmas
For Immediate Release
Contact: Attorney Brad Dacus (916) 857-6900

Sacramento, CA—In the wake of unprecedented efforts to silence religious expression relating to Christmas, the Pacific Justice Institute is working to counter rampant misinformation about the legality of America’s most beloved holiday.

In one of many incidents brought to PJI’s attention, a member of a well-known automobile organization noticed the obvious absence of a nativity scene in a holiday display at the organization’s Southern California office. Upon inquiry, she was told there was no nativity scene because it was “illegal.” To the contrary, after contacting Pacific Justice Institute, she realized she had been greatly misinformed. “There is absolutely nothing illegal about Christmas,” stated Kevin Snider, Chief Counsel of Pacific Justice Institute. “Even in the most restrictive context—government-sponsored displays—the U.S. Supreme Court has held that nativity scenes and other religious symbols are entitled to equal footing with pop icons like Frosty the Snowman. By contrast, there are zero restrictions on private citizens and companies—including retailers and employers—who wish to acknowledge the true meaning of Christmas.” READ MORE

Governor Schwarzenegger Denies Clemency to Convicted Murderer Stanley Williams

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger issued the following statement today following his decision not to grant clemency to convicted murder Stanley Williams:

"Clemency cases are always difficult and this one is no exception. After studying the evidence, searching the history, listening to the arguments and wrestling with the profound consequences, I could find no justification for granting clemency. The facts do not justify overturning the jury's verdict or the decisions of the courts in this case."
